Stephanie Gora's research focuses on drinking water management in small and Arctic communities and the development and evaluation of light-based technologies for water purification. She previously held an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Centre for Water Resources Studies at Dalhousie University and holds a PhD in civil engineering with a focus on drinking water treatment from the University of Toronto. Between 2009 and 2012 she worked as a consulting engineer at CBCL Limited in Halifax and is registered as a professional engineer. Stephanie is actively involved in various industry associations including the American Water Works Association and the International UV Association.

Caroline is a PhD candidate in civil engineering at the Lassonde School of Engineering with a strong focus on optimizing drinking water in the Arctic using participatory approaches to system dynamics modelling. Under the guidance of Prof. Stephanie Gora, her research seeks to understand the complex factors that affect the quality and accessibility of drinking water in the Arctic using an interdisciplinary approach. Through her research, Caroline works closely with the Municipality of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, collaborating with community members, government, and NGO stakeholders involved with drinking water from source to tap.

Dr. Patrick Maher has spent a career exploring how people use outdoor environments, and how their use of those spaces offer them meaning and value. Dr. Maher is Professor of Physical and Health Education at Nipissing University and in 2025 has been one of the first recipients of the Grímsson Fellowship, allowing him to continue his research in an idyllic space close to the Arctic and to promote relations between international and Icelandic communities.

Commenting on his appointment as a fellow, Dr Maher said, “The impact of tourism on the community is real, particularly in summer months – concerns are being shared, but may not always be heard. For management of unique, remote areas, the anecdotal evidence of overuse is clear. This type of external, academic research gives wider examination and analysis.”
